As of 2023, more than 70 countries, covering over three-quarters of global emissions, have set net zero targets. At the same time, thousands of cities, businesses, financial institutions and educational institutions have independently pledged action to reduce carbon emissions. Most net zero targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement, which called for global net zero emissions by 2050 in an effort to keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C above preindustrial levels. With the energy system central todecarbonising the global economy, there is a requirement for a dramatic energy transition. This is well under way, with greenhouse gas emissions from the global energy sector expected to reach their peak this year.
